The Balancing Act
There is a large emphasis on finding a balance in life, so as to lead as fulfilling an existence as possible. Is there a pie chart that helps to shove the process along? Lately my balance hasn’t been feeling so… balanced.
The whole point of goal-setting is to create a meaningful journey that is important enough to fight for if necessary. My journey has definitely been worth fighting for, and it’s barely begun—I’ve only been working on my own for six months, and things have been coming together with precision and a touch of drama.
I’m not quite sure what is missing, but feel that I am coming closer to what is right for me—perhaps it has something to do with a career like mine being such a singular experience.
Recently, I attended a business gala in Ottawa where those who earned awards went up to the podium with their 10-20 staff members. Then there was me—little miss sole proprietorship with crickets in the background as I went up for my plaque; the audience uncertain about whether to clap or not, since they were waiting for other staff members to follow my lead up to the podium.
While it was a great experience, one I definitely wouldn’t trade as it was my first dinner gala representing my business, it would have been more meaningful to me had I been there with others who would have been just as elated.
It’s a hard thing to find though, even with employees, because while they can feel a passion for their job, it’s not as personal as it is to the employer. I know the importance of dividing your personal and business lives, but to me it is personal, and I don’t feel there is anything wrong with that. In fact, I feel it’s what’s given me the edge and motivation to keep growing my business, and create a balance that works for me, even if the balance feels non-existent at times.
