How do you begin the process of writing a novel?
How much outlining or drafting do you perform when writing a book?
How do you go about your research?

The process of writing a novel usually begins with an idea. I let that seed roll around in my brain, germinating, until it feels right, and then I write a few chapters. If it still feels good, I plot out major scenes in a rough outline format, and nab a spiral notebook. I break down my research needs and give each one a section in the notebook, using attachable colored tabs for the divisions

I begin research online, jotting notes. If I need more information, I dig that up, whether that means a trip to the intended setting site, or making contact with someone in a particular field who can answer questions for me. For example, with Dark Secrets, I talked with Deputy Sheriff Gary Bergemeier. With Emma’s Choice, I followed the Wymore Legion Baseball team around, taking notes and asking questions. I also set up an interview with Mike Henrichs, the model I used for the main character; visited him at school, and attended a football game he quarterbacked. With Forbidden Fantasies, I flew to San Jose, California and met with undercover detective John Hughmanic.

Because I include some erotic content, I also feel research into that area is important as well. I try to keep a fresh approach by reading what other erotica authors write. I have also spent many hours online in chat rooms, talking with men. They are more than willing to tell me what they like, what turns them on, how it feels, etc. I believe that helps me write from the male point of view more effectively. I’ve also been known to surf online porn sites for ideas, visuals, and info on practices I need to know more about. The hardest part of THIS kind of research, is learning to type one-handed. J
